Yay, Maddie!!! (and Ben)

Early this morning Maddie set off to run in her first organized 5k. In October she joined a wonderful program called Girls On the Run. They meet after school twice a week and the girls are taught a lesson on topics like how to be a good friend, how to stay safe, how to handle bullying, etc. Then they all run.

A few years ago, Maddie wanted to spend more time with her Dad and took up going on an occasional jog with him in the mornings. She and Ben even ran a race together back when she was still six in the summer of 2007:

Shortly after the 2007 race, Maddie's passion for running died. I think she mainly enjoyed spending time with her dad.

I was surprised and excited when Maddie brought me the forms for Girls On The Run and asked if she could do it. How can you say no when your child wants to join a program like this?

She has had a lot of growing pains in her legs this year. Ben's mom says she remembers having excruciating growing pains at Maddie's age, so I suppose Maddie's complaints are legit. Anyway, she worked through her aching legs by mixing up walking/jogging/running. We were never concerned with her being the fastest, we were just happy that she was out doing something good with her time.

I was disappointed to not be there to see her cross the finish line this morning, but the race was at the crack of dawn in the freezing cold, and after my experience at the dentist with my other three kids yesterday (which included such highlights as Zack deciding to play a game on my phone in the very crowded waiting room, where there are signs that say please turn off your cell phone, and Zack deciding to go to the Air Horn app which ended up getting jammed LOUDLY playing the air horn noise and I could not turn it down or off and finally ended up yanking out the battery....good times), so I let the kids sleep and stayed home with them.

Maddie called me as soon as she was finished and was super excited to have a personal best time.

Yay, Maddie!!!!!
